SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -
Cal Poly attempted 40 shots, including 14 on goal, but was forced to settle for a double-overtime 0-0 draw against rival UC Santa Barbara in a Big West Conference women¹s soccer match Friday night before 734 in Mustang Stadium.
The Mustangs, who outshot the Gauchos 40-9, including a 23-2 advantage in the second half of regulation, saw their record go to
6-2-5 overall and 2-1-2 in conference matches. The visiting Gauchos are now 9-4-2 overall and 4-0-1 in the Big West.
Cal Poly squandered numerous scoring opportunities throughout the contest as UC Santa Barbara goalkeeper Catherine Burson recorded 10 saves. The Gauchos were credited with four other team saves. For the freshman Burson, it was her fourth shutout of the season.
Cal Poly netminder Liz Hill had three saves.
Mustang forwards Sharon Day and Becky Clark each attempted seven shots while forward Kelsey Carroll had six. A shot by Mustang midfielder Heather Bryan with one minute to play hit the crossbar.
UC Santa Barbara¹s best shot at scoring was a direct kick by Nicole Remmenga six yards out with all 11 Mustangs standing in front of the net with two minutes to play in regulation, but the shot was blocked by the Cal Poly wall.
UC Santa Barbara had 14 fouls, one more than Cal Poly.
The tie was the third scoreless draw for the Mustangs this season and the second for the Gauchos. UCSB has now allowed just two goals in five Big West contests and just three in its last ten matches overall.
UCSB is off for the remainder of the weekend. The Gauchos will host Pacific on Friday, October 22, in a 7:00 p.m. match.
