Sandza Scores Game-Winner In 81st-Minute As Women's Soccer Edges Cal State Northridge, 4-3

Oct. 13, 2002

Box Score

Santa Barbara, Calif. - Sophomore midfielder Krystal Sandza scored her second goal of the match and her second game-winning goal on the weekend as she led the UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team to a 4-3 Big West Conference win over Cal State Northridge on Sunday night.

With the score tied 3-3, freshman midfielder Kristyn Bright hit sophomore forward Jennifer Borcich with a pass on the end line. Borcich then hit Sandza in the middle of the penalty box and at the 80:39 mark, Sandza pounded a shot past Matador goalkeeper Mary Alessi, giving the Gauchos the win.

Jen Codington got UCSB on the board at the 4:44 mark in the first half on a penalty kick. Codington was knocked down in the penalty area and was awarded the penalty kick. Northridge tied the score at the 9:53 mark when Leila Pate scored off of a rebound and a scramble in front of the Gaucho goal.

The score remained tied until Sandza tallied an unassisted goal at the 34:37 mark in the first half. Northridge knotted the score in the 58th minute when Ashley Licata scored on a penalty kick after being tripped in the penalty box.

With the score tied 2-2, the Gauchos responded again as Borcich took a feed from Sandza about 35 yards out, beat two defenders, got the goalie out of the box and scored on a shot just inside the right goal post. The Matadors tied the score again in the 68th minute when Jenny Vargas took a pass from Jenny Graham and hit a one-timer from 15 yards out in the middle of the penalty box, setting the stage for Sandza's heroics.

"Krystal (Sandza) was outstanding again," said UCSB head coach Paul Stumpf. "I also thought that Kristyn Bright really had a great game. We were a little flat tonight and Kristyn did a good job of attacking loose balls and helping us transition into our offense. She really made the game-winning play happen."

The win improves UCSB's record to 9-3-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the Big West. Cal State Northridge drops to 1-12-0 on the season and 0-4-0 in Big West play. The Gauchos return to action on Friday, October 18 when they travel to Utah State for a 2:00 p.m. match.
