SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
Kelly Hurley scored an unassisted goal in the 38th-minute, and Danica Pommerenck added an insurance goal in the 89th-minute, to lead UC Riverside to a 2-0 shutout win over UC Santa Barbara on Sunday night.
Hurley's goal, her first of the season, came from long-distance. At 37:37, she took the ball above the left corner of the penalty box and lofted a shot towards the upper right hand corner of the goal. UCSB goalkeeper Jamie Considine made a leaping attempt to poke the ball over the crossbar, but it was beyond her reach and the Highlanders took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The score remained 1-0 until 88:38 when UCR caught the Gauchos pressing forward. Vanessa Chanez drove into the box and found Pommerenck on the left-hand side of the box. Chanez slid pass over to the streaking Pommerrenck who went one-on-one with Considine and shoved it past the UCSB keeper, giving the Highlanders the 2-0 win.
Santa Barbara outshot Riverside by a 28-8 count, but the Gauchos had just a few dangerous chances. The most dangerous came about 20 minutes into the match when junior forward Jennifer Borcich struck a hard shot from 15-yards out. The shot hit the cross bar and caromed straight down. UCR goalkeeper Tawny Poggio quickly pounced on the rebound and preserved the shutout. On the night, Poggio had ten saves.
The loss extends UCSB's winless streak to five matches in a row. The Gauchos are now 6-5-3 overall and 1-2-1 in the Big West. UCR improves to 8-4-2 overall and 1-1-0 in the Big West. Santa Barbara returns to action on Sunday, October 19, when it hosts Cal Poly in a 7:00 p.m. match.
