Stockton, Calif. -
Freshman forward Jen Borcich scored her fifth goal of the season, sophomore forward Kelsey Bollinger added her first, and senior goalkeeper Mary Gleason came up with 12 saves, as the UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team opened Big West play with a 2-1 win on the road at the University of the Pacific.
Borcich got the Gauchos on the board first, punching one into the right side of the net at the 43:28 mark off of a volley from sophomore Inez Oriol. Less then ten minutes into the second half, Bollinger gave UCSB a 2-0 lead, when she headed a cross from junior forward Erica Perrotta past goalkeeper Megan Pickering.
The Tigers narrowed the gap to 2-1 at the 72:01 mark, when forward Kim Force took a pass from Ashley Dinwoodie and headed one past Gleason.
Gleason was outstanding on the night, coming up with numerous huge saves. In fact, while Gleason piled up a season-high 12 saves, seven came in the second half. As a team, the Gauchos were outshot 21-9, but they had the advantage where it counted the most, 2-1 on the scoreboard.
The win snaps a three match Gaucho winless skein. UCSB is now 5-5-1 overall, but more importantly, they open Big West play with a 1-0 mark. Pacific drops to 1-2 in Big West action, 8-4-0 overall.
UCSB remains on the road for another Big West match on Sunday evening. The Gauchos travel to Cal State Northridge to take on the Matadors at 7:00 p.m.
