SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
Junior forward Ali Pavoni scored at the 91:58 mark in the first half of overtime, to give visiting sixth-ranked Pepperdine a 3-2 win over UC Santa Barbara in a women's soccer match on Thursday night.
The game-winner was set-up by a poor defensive clearing. Midfielder Jenn Ainsworth re-directed the missed clear to forward Lacey Ubaldi who flicked the ball to Pavoni who struck it to the far post for the game-winner.
The overtime goal by Pepperdine short-circuited a second half UCSB rally. The Waves took a two-goal lead into halftime. They scored their first goal in the 24th minute when forward Megan Woods took a pass from forward Mary Stuart and chipped one over Gaucho goalkeeper Jamie Considine. The Waves tallied their goal at 38:45 when Lindsey Redlin took a cross from Courtney Nelson and drove the ball past a diving Considine.
The Gauchos pulled to within 2-1 just over three minutes into the second half. A Pepperdine defender was whistled for holding UCSB's Krystal Sandza about ten-yards straight away in front of the Waves goal. Sandza scored her seventh goal of the season on a penalty kick.
Santa Barbara tied the score at the 67:15 mark when Sandza put-home a rebound of a Chandi Bickford shot. It was Sandza's eighth goal of the campaign and it set the stage for the overtime dramatics.
UCSB outshot Pepperdine by a 20-12 count, but the Waves had a pair of shots in the overtime and the Gauchos had none. Pepperdine goalkeeper Anna Picarelli had four saves and Considine had three.
The win improves the Waves record to 10-2-0. UCSB drops to 6-4-3. It was the Gauchos fourth consecutive overtime match and it extended their winless streak to four straight matches.
Santa Barbara returns to action on Sunday, October 12, when it hosts UC Riverside in a a Big West match that will kick-off at 7:00 p.m.
