Santa Barbara, Calif. -
UC Santa Barbara earned its second win in row Friday night as it defeated Idaho State, 1-0. The Santa Barbara defense stepped up and shut down an offense that had outscored its opponents 9-4 during its last three games. The loss also snapped a three-game winning streak for Idaho State.
Both teams played solid defense in the first half as only seven total shots were attempted. The Gauchos attempted four shots while the Bengals attempted only three. The closest either team came to scoring in the first half was at the 35:00 mark when freshman Janel Graham of Idaho State fired a shot that hit the right goal post.
The winning and only goal of the match came at the 73:52 mark when freshman Inez Oriol fired in a deflected pass by senior Meghann Phillips. It was the first goal of the season for Oriol. After that UCSB's defense took over as Meghann Phillips, sophomore Katie Wilson, and freshman Kristin Avery held the Bengals to only two shots-on-goal. Junior Mary Gleason recorded her third shutout of the year.
With the win UCSB improved its record to 4-3-1 with a 4-1-1 mark at home. Idaho State dropped to 7-4-1. The Gauchos will cap off their homestand Sunday, September 24 at 7:00 pm as they meet Pepperdine University.
