Santa Barbara, Calif. -
UC Santa Barbara ended its two game losing streak Wednesday night as they defeated Westmont 1-0. UCSB controlled most of the action against NAIA top-ranked Westmont University. Santa Barbara entered the match without senior co-captain April Loveland, who will miss two weeks due to a strained MCL.
The Gauchos and the Warriors were struggling back and forth during the first half as they both attempted three shots each. The best action came in the 26:00 mark as sophomore Jenn Coddington kicked out a Westmont deflection that would have scored a goal.
UC Santa Barbara's goal came early in the second half at the 46:25 mark as sophomore Erica Perrotta laid a picture-perfect cross to freshman Kelsey Bollinger. The goal was the first of the year for Bollinger.
During the rest of the second half the Gaucho defense took over anchored by senior co-captain Meghann Phillips. The duo of sophomore Katie Wilson and junior Kim O'Leary stepped in for an injured April Loveland and held Westmont to only two shots in the second half with none being on-goal. Junior Mary Gleason recorded her second shutout of the season.
The win moves the Gauchos back to an even mark of 3-3-1. The Westmont Warriors drop to 4-2. Santa Barbara's next game will be at home against Idaho State, September 22 at 6:00pm. This will be the opening game of the Big West Conference schedule for UCSB.
