Santa Barbara, Calif. -
Sophomore forward Quinn Sellers came off the bench to score a pair of late goals for Villanova as the Wildcats blanked the UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team Friday night at UCSB's Harder Stadium, 2-0.
Sellers scored her first goal at 75:46 of the match when she drove through the top of the box, beat the final Gaucho defender and then bounced a shot past a charging Mary Gleason for the first goal of the match. Just under ten minutes later, at the 85:23 mark, Sellers stole the ball from a UCSB defender and once again went in one-on-one against Gleason, booting it into the back of the net to give the Wildcats their 2-0 victory.
UCSB narrowly outshot Villanova, 11-10, but junior goalkeeper Janel Shillig, the 1999 Big East Goalkeeper of the Year, came up with four saves to record her third shutout of the season. Offensively, the Gauchos had a handful of chances and they were led by sophomore midfielder Erica Perrotta who had three shots. Senior forward Sondra Williamson had the Gauchos' best opportunity to score when she drilled a shot from about 12-yards out in the 65th minute, but Shillig made a leaping stab and punched the ball over the crossbar.
The loss by UCSB was compounded by an injury to All-Big West defender April Loveland. In the 49th minute, Loveland collided with a Wildcat player and fell to the turf. She was helped off the field with a knee injury and did not return. It was the first match Loveland has not started and completed this season. She will be re-examined Saturday.
With the defeat, the Gauchos drop to 2-2-1. Villanova has now won five matches in a row and are 5-1. UCSB returns to action on Sunday evening when they travel to Cal State Northridge for a 6:00 p.m. match.
