Santa Barbara, Calif. -
UC Santa Barbara won its second consecutive match on Sunday afternoon as they defeated University of Hawaii, 2-0. UCSB remained undefeated at home, 2-0-1. The loss makes it two in a row for Hawaii.
Defense was the key to victory again for the Gauchos as they held the Rainbow Wahine to ten shots on goal, with only four coming in the second half. The UCSB defense, led by senior co-captains Meghann Phillips and April Loveland, made it easy for freshman goalkeeper Lindsay Barr as she only had to save two shots on goal out of 11. This was Barr's first career start which was a shutout.
Coach Paul Stumpf said, "We wanted to give our freshman goalkeeper an opportunity to get experience and she didn't disappoint."
The Gauchos scored their first goal on a penalty kick by junior Kathryn Fox at the 10:12 mark. The penalty kick was awarded to Santa Barbara after a handball was called on Hawaii off sophomore Jen Coddington's kick inside the box.
UCSB scored its second goal at the 33:00 mark as Meghann Phillips connected on a header off junior Brianna Preis' corner kick.
With the win, the Gauchos are now 2-1-1 on the season while the Rainbow Wahine are now 2-3-1. The Gauchos continue their homestand Friday, September 15 against the University of Villanova at 7:00 p.m.
