Women's Soccer Opens Home Schedule With A 0-0 Draw Against Loyola Marymount

Sept. 3, 2000

Box Score

Santa Barbara - UC Santa Barbara opened its 2000 home schedule with a 0-0 draw against Loyola Marymount Sunday. The contest marked the beginning of a four game homestand.

The teams jumped out to slow start as most of the action see-sawed in the midfield. The visting team managed only two shots while the Gauchos produced only one which came on a late flurry with about 40:00 into the match. The Gauchos were victimized towards the final 20 minutes as they were called for 12 fouls to only three by the Lions.

In the second half Loyola Marymount came out aggresively as they put the pressure on UCSB and outshot the home team 7-3. Mary Gleason helped preserve the scoreless tie with four of her six saves in the second half. UCSB overcame the slow start and once again rallied late, but when the smoke cleared the match remained scoreless. As in the first half, UCSB fouls hampered its momentum throughout the half. The Gauchos finished with 30 fouls, including yellow cards to senior defenders April Loveland and Meghann Phillips.

The sudden-victory overtime produced the best action of the match as the teams raced up and down the field each coming close to scoring. Loyola Marymount's best chance came on a corner kick in the second half of the overtime period. The Lions were led by Junior forward Erica Florez with four shots-on-goal. The Gauchos were led by senior defender Meghann Phillips who took two shots-on-goal and was instrumental in her team's defensive effort.

With the tie, the Gauchos are now 0-1-1 on the season while the Lions are now 1-0-1. The Gauchos continue their homestand Friday, Sepetember 8 against Northern Arizona University at 7:00 p.m.
