Christina Romero and Stephanie Barnier scored goals less than a minute apart in the second half to lead the University of San Diego to a 3-0 women's soccer victory over UC Santa Barbara on Friday night.
USD and UCSB battled to a 0-0 tie at halftime of their season-opening match in San Diego on Friday, but the Toreros' Romero notched the game-winner at 66:23, giving her team a 1-0 advantage. Barnier made the score 2-0 less than a minute later, at the 67:12 mark. Claire Currie added an insurance goal at 81:34, to give the 24th-ranked Toreros a 3-0 victory.
Sophomore Jen Codington had three of Santa Barbara's 12 shots on the night. Junior Mary Gleason got the start in goal and produced seven saves. She had five of the saves in the first half to preserve a 0-0 halftime tie.
The Gauchos drop to 0-1 on the season and return to action against another nationally-ranked opponent from the West Coast Conference when they host Loyola Marymount at Harder Stadium on Sunday, September 3 at 1:00 p.m.
