SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
Jeff Gardina was selected Big West cross country athlete of the week for his winning performance at last Saturday's Riverside Invitational. The Gauchos are picked to finish third in the conference coach's poll.
Gardina, a junior from Santa Rosa, claimed Big West AOY honors after winning the Riverside Invitational in a time of 24:23.8 for the 8 kilometer course. Gardina was also listed as an honorable mention AOY in the Santa Barbara News Press.
As a team the Gauchos are picked by the Big West coaches to finish third at this year's championship. UCSB finished third in 2002. Cal Poly is tabbed to repeat as conference champions followed by Utah State who was the runner-up in 2002.
The cross country squads will travel to Palo Alto this weekend to compete in the Stanford Invitational. The first race goes off at 3:45pm on Saturday on the University Golf Course.
