Brea, Calif. - The UCSB Men's Cross Country squad put a young team on the line at the Cal State Fullerton Jammin' Invitational. "As a whole, we were hoping for a somewhat higher score as a team," said head coach Pete Dolan in regard to the team's 9th place finish out of twelve teams. "But we did manage to give a few of our inexperienced guys some cross country experience."

Freshmen Scott Brandos and Scott McConville each sampled their first taste of running at the collegiate level by finishing 52nd and 53rd respectively in the scoring spots. Junior Darren Salmi paced the youngsters finishing 51st.

The majority of the men's squad sat out of the competition in preparation for upcoming meets. "Our men are solid right now," said assistant coach Jeff Jacobs. "We have nine guys that are probably in the best shape of their lives. We don't want to squander their best races too early in the year."

Among the men on deck to compete in the future are Eric Gans, Josh Horton, Bryon Lamorandier, Dave Monico, Steve Rider, J.T. Service, Aaron Sharp, Brandon von Guenthner and Chris White. Juniors J.T. Service and Dave Monico are being given strong consideration to red-shirt by Dolan, leaving a veteran lineup composed of six athletes in their fourth or fifth year.

On September 15th, the men will race their only home meet of the year on the UCSB Lagoon Course. Though most of the team is expected to compete, the regular season will not commence until the Stanford Invitational, scheduled for September 29th. "We aren't going to unload everything we have until Stanford," said Jacobs. "We're still in the developmental process."
