STANFORD, Calif. -- In a meet that included three teams currently ranked in the national polls, the Gaucho cross country squad took fifth place at the Stanford Invitational after running a solid race. The team finished ahead of the four other Big West schools at the meet.

Scott Smith led the squad, coming in ninth place overall with a time of 24:37. Next across the line was Julian DeRubira, who was 19th overall at 25:04. Waleed Totari rounded out the top three, finishing in 30th place at 25:24. The other scorers were youngsters Anthony Masci (44th, 25:47), and Andrew Pilavjian (49th, 25:50).

The top teams at the meet were nationally-ranked Stanford, California, and Arkansas. Chico State, one of the strongest teams in Division II, also participated. Big West schools in attendance were UCSB, UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton, UC Davis, and Long Beach State.

Stanford were the winners of both the men's and women's races. The Cardinal men took the 8,000 meter race with just 38 points, and the women won the 6,000 meter race with 43 points. Scotty Bauhs of Chico State was the individual winner of the men's race, completing the course with a time of 23:45. Laura Olvera of UC Irvine took the women's crown, finishing with a time of 20:42.
