Gauchos Edge Cal Poly in Dual and Four-Way Season-Opening Meet at UCSB

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Chris White, Art Avitia and David Monico finished fifth, sixth and seventh, to lead the UC Santa Barbara men's cross country team to victories in their four-way meet and double-dual meets on Saturday at UCSB's Lagoon Course.

White ran the 8-kilometer race in 24:59, narrowly edging his teammates Avitia (25:00) and Monico (25:00). The three-man pack was enough to give the Gauchos a narrow win in the four-way meet as they logged 32 points, followed by Cal Poly (33 points), Gaucho Alumni (76 points) and Long Beach State (94 points). In the dual meets, UCSB topped Cal Poly, 27-28, and Long Beach State, 15-50. Cal Poly defeated Long Beach in their dual meet, 15-44.

Cal Poly's Nate Brassmassery was the top finisher among the three school's at the meet. He recorded a time of 24:57, defeating White by two seconds. The winner of the race overall was Ben Bruce, who was running unattached. Bruce ran a 24:35. Sean Ricketts, also running unattached, ran a 24:51, and Eric Gans, running as part of a Gaucho Alumni team ran a 24;52, to finish second and third respectively.

Following Monico's seventh-place spot were three Cal Poly runners, Matt Swaney (25:02), Nick Zoetewey (25:02) and Mario Macias (25:04). UCSB's Pablo Gallegos finished 12th at 25:16.

The Gauchos return to action on Saturday, September 13, when they travel to Riverside to take part in the UC Riverside Invitational.
