Senior Brian Alexander led all scorers by netting four goals in UCSB's 7-6 loss to Cal in the seventh-place match on Sunday at the MPSF Tournament in Stanford, Calif.
Freshman Robbie Bauer and senior Andrew Schoneberger also added a goal for the Gauchos in the loss. Both Cal and UCSB had trouble scoring in the first quarter, resulting only in an Alexander goal with 1:57 left in the period. Heading into the second quarter, the Gauchos led 1-0, but that lead would soon dissolve. In the second quarter, Cal came out strong, scoring four goals and only allowing one in return to take a 4-2 halftime lead.
Both teams managed to score two goals in the third quarter, and as the quarter came to a close, Cal held its two-goal advantage. With the Gauchos trailing by two headed into the fourth quarter, UCSB's offense picked up. In the quarter, UCSB managed to outscore Cal 2-1, including Alexander's fourth goal to pull within one with 53 seconds left in regulation. Despite the effort, the Gauchos fell short, losing by a count of 7-6 and resulting in an eighth-place finish at the tournament.
Junior goalkeeper Jon Bonafede recorded 13 saves in goal for the Gauchos.
With the loss, the Gauchos finish their season with an overall record of 18-14, 2-6 in MPSF play.
