After the halftime intermission, Long Beach State came out strong. In the third, the 49ers managed to outscore the Gauchos four goals to two, and left the score knotted at eight headed into the fourth quarter of play. The Gauchos scored early in the fourth quarter, and carried a two goal advantage with 4:35 left to play in regulation. After the 4:35 mark, Long Beach caught fire in the water, scoring one goal with 4:16 to play and the equalizer with 1:55 left on the game clock.
Long Beach State stayed hot in overtime by netting three goals, including two by Brad Scoles. UCSB managed to scrape up one goal in the first overtime period and another in the second, but its effort fell two goals short, resulting in the 14-12 loss.
Junior goalkeeper Jon Bonafede recorded 10 saves in goal for the Gauchos.
With the loss, the Gauchos fall to 18-13 on the year. UCSB continues action on Sunday at the MPSF Tournament when it takes on No. 6 California at 12:00 pm. The match will be played for the seventh-place spot in the tournament.
