No. 7 UCSB, shut out in three of the four quarters played, dropped its first match of the MPSF tournament at the Avery Aquatics Complex 6-1 to No. 1 UCLA on Friday night in Stanford, Calif.
Senior Brian Alexander was the only Gaucho that managed to net a goal against the top-ranked UCLA squad. UCLA senior Brett Ormsby led all scorers with two goals in the match. Alexander's goal sent his consecutive scoring streak to 19 matches with at least one goal. In addition, Alexander's goal moved him into a tie with Jason Likins for the seventh spot on UCSB's all time scoring list.
UCLA jumped out to take an early three-goal advantage and shut out the Gauchos in the first quarter of play. Similarly, the Bruins managed to score two more goals in the second quarter, while once again shutting out UCSB. After the first half, the Gauchos trailed 5-0.
The second half was evenly matched, with each team scoring one goal apiece. Both of the goals came in the third quarter, and after the third the score was 6-1 in favor of UCLA. The fourth quarter of play resulted in no goals for either side, and the final score remained 6-1.
Junior goalkeeper Jon Bonafede recorded nine saves in goal for the Gauchos.
With the loss, the Gauchos fall to 18-12 on the year. With the victory, UCLA extended its longest winning streak since 1990 to 17 matches. UCSB continues action in the MPSF Tournament when it battles Long Beach State at 2:00 pm on Saturday.
