Gauchos Fall to UCLA, Place Sixth at MPSF Tournament

BERKELEY, Calif. - Despite five goals from freshman Milos Golic, the UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team was unable to overcome UCLA on Sunday afternoon, falling 15-8 to the Bruins during the fifth-place game at the 2007 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship Tournament.

With the loss, UCSB ends the season with a 19-14 cumulative record, one win shy of posting back-to-back 20-win seasons. UCLA finishes at 21-7.

Krsto Sbutega and Scott Davidson led UCLA with three goals apiece in the win while seven additional Bruins chipped in goals for a solid team effort. Matt Kellogg notched seven saves in the cage for the Bruins.

In addition to Golic's five goals, junior Miles Price had two in the loss and senior Ross Sinclair posted one in his final game with the Gauchos. Sophomore goalie Michael Robinson led the Gauchos with seven saves while senior Rick Wright had two blocks.

After the first quarter of play, the Gauchos and Bruins were deadlocked at 3-3. UCLA outscored UCSB, 9-2 over the next 16 minutes of play to lead 12-5 heading into the fourth quarter. The two teams each tallied three goals apiece in the final quarter as UCLA earned the fifth-place tournament finish with the 15-8 victory.

USC captured first-place in the tournament and the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament with a 10-6 win over UC Irvine in the championship game.
