Second-ranked Cal topped No. 9 UC Santa Barbara today at UCSB's Rec Cen Pool by a score of 10-5. The win improves the Bears to 18-5 overall and 5-3 in MPSF play, while the loss drops the Gauchos to 11-15 overall and 0-7 in the MPSF.
UCSB got off on the right foot with senior Doug Arthur finding the back of the net to begin the game, however, Cal answered quickly. Senior Will Quist netted three goals and freshman Brian Kinsel scored one before the first period ended to put Cal up 4-1.
Both teams battled until a minute was left in the first half when Arthur scored his second goal, making the score 4-2.
Minutes into the second half, senior 2-meter Steve Traverso found the back of the net to bring UCSB to within one, however, that was as close as Santa Barbara would get. Cal's Kinsel, Greg Panawek, Adrija Vasiljevic, Greg Snyder, and Milos Ribic would all score before the Gauchos could answer, to put the game away.
As the clock wound down, sophomore Ramiro Saldain and freshman Ross Sinclair scored one goal apiece for Santa Barbara, but it was too little too late as Cal went on to win 10-5.
UC Santa Barbara returns to action tomorrow, Nov. 16 at 3:00 p.m. against No. 14 Pacific in the last MPSF match of the season. The game will be the last regular-season home match for seniors Doug Arthur and Steve Traverso.
