LONG BEACH, Calif. - Freshman Reid Tomassi scored a career-high tying five goals to lead the Long Beach State men's water polo team to a 12-8 win over UC Santa Barbara on Sunday afternoon at the 49er Campus Pool. With the two victory, the seventh-ranked 49ers improved to 14-9 overall and 3-2 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). UCSB fell to 11-12 overall and 0-5 in the MPSF.
The 49ers jumped to a 3-1 lead versus UCSB after one quarter as Erik Geoffroy scored two first quarter goals for The Beach. Tomassi scored his first two goals of the day in the second quarter, the first at the 6:20 mark and the second at 4:50, giving LBSU a 5-1 lead.
The Gauchos fought back to out-score the 49ers 3-1 the remainder of the quarter, to pull to within 6-4 at the half. Both teams scored twice in the third quarter setting up a big fourth quarter by the 49ers. Leading 9-7 early in the fourth, the 49ers scored three straight goals to put the game away. Brad Scoles tallied at the 5:09 mark, giving LBSU a 10-7 lead, and then David Del Grande found the back of the net at 4:07. Tomassi's fifth and final goal came at the 1:30 mark and gave the 49ers a 12-7 advantage. Geoffroy, Del Grande and Scoles all scored two goals for the 49ers.
Brian Alexander led UCSB with three goals while Ian Christensen and Doug Arthur added two each.
The Gauchos return to the pool on Friday, November 7 when they travel to UC San Diego. UCSB will host USC on Sunday, November 9 at the Recreation Center Pool beginning at 4:00 p.m.
