In a mid-season match between two closely ranked opponents, No. 8 UC Irvine upended No. 9 UC Santa Barbara by a score of 10-8. The loss drops the Gauchos to 11-11 on the season and 0-4 in the MPSF. UCI improves to 10-11 and 1-3 in the MPSF.

Halfway through the first quarter UCSB scored the first goal of the match coming from the hot hand of junior Andrew Schoneberger. The goal was one of four that Schoneberger would record, increasing his season total to 30.

The Anteaters didn't wait long to respond as Dan Noon found the back of the net to knot the game at one. Noon's goal was also one of four on the evening for the junior 2-meter.

The score remained close until the last minute of regulation when UCI sent two shots past Gaucho goalkeeper Rick Wright. With 21 seconds remaining, Noon fired his fourth goal to seal the victory.

Other players to score for Santa Barbara were Doug Arthur, Brian Alexander, and Steve Traverso. Arthur found the back of the net two times to improve his season total to 23, while Alexander and Traverso both scored once.

Rick Merlo tallied four goals for UC Irvine and Phil Garcia added two scores as well.

UCSB returns to action tomorrow in a 12 p.m. match at Long Beach State. Sunday, November 9, the Gauchos come home to the Recreation Center Pool to battle USC. The following weekend Santa Barbara will play two more home matches against Cal and Pacific.
