SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
The No. 2 Cardinal scored seven unanswered goals to begin the match and guide themselves to a 10-5 victory over UC Santa Barbara on Sunday at Campus Pool.
Stanford driver Tony Azavedo, a 2004 U.S. Olympian, led all scorers with three goals on the match. The leading scorer for the Gauchos was Chris Gronow, who found the back of the net twice. Seniors Brian Alexander and Andrew Schoneberger along with freshman Coulson Lantz each scored one goal in the match.
The first quarter was dominated by Stanford, which scored four goals and shut out the Gaucho offense. Azavedo scored two of his three goals in the first. The second quarter began just like the first quarter ended, with Cardinal players netting three goals within the first three minutes. Finally, with 3:45 left in the first half, junior Chris Gronow managed to find the net by tossing a lob-shot into the far corner and past the Cardinal goalkeeper. This shot sparked the Gaucho offense, resulting in goals by Alexander and Schoneberger to make the score 7-3 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Gauchos managed to outscore the Cardinal by a count of 2-1. Azavedo scored first for Stanford, but UC Santa Barbara answered back to post two goals of its own. The first came off another off-speed shot by Gronow, followed by a goal by Lantz with four seconds left to play in the third. After three quarters, the Gauchos trailed 8-5. Stanford once again shut out the Santa Barbara offense in the fourth quarter, while at the same time managing to net two goals. As the final buzzer sounded, the score read 10-5 in favor of Stanford.
Junior goalkeeper Jon Bonafede recorded 16 saves in goal for the Gauchos.
With the loss, the Gauchos fall to 17-8 on the year, 2-3 in MPSF play. Stanford improves to 16-3 overall, 4-1 in the MPSF. UC Santa Barbara will once again hit Campus Pool's water when they take on No. 1 UCLA on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
