UCSB Falls to No. 1 USC, 10-3

Oct. 23, 2005

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara (9-12, 0-3) managed to score only one goal in the first half of play before falling to top-ranked USC (14-1, 1-0) on Sunday at Campus Pool.

USC took an early lead in the first quarter when Juan Delgadillo found the back of the net within the first thirty seconds of play. Delgadillo, who finished with three goals on the match, added another to give the Trojans a 2-0 advantage. With 1:35 left in the first quarter, the Gauchos found themselves on the offensive in a six-on-five situation and sophomore Coulson Lantz netted the first Gaucho goal. USC toughened its defense in the second quarter, allowing no UCSB goals while its offense stayed potent. Juraj Zatovic scored two of his four goals in the second quarter, while Pavol Valovic also put one in the cage to give USC a 5-1 halftime lead.

The third quarter proved the same for USC when it scored three more goals, including two more by Zatovic. Once again, the Gaucho offense failed to net a goal and at the end of the third, the Gauchos trailed 8-1. UCSB and USC traded goals in the final quarter, and USC emerged a winner by a count of 10-3. Two-meter Tommy Corcoran netted a goal in the quarter for USC. Jeff El-Hajj also added a score in the quarter for the Trojans. Freshmen Danny Natalizio and Miles Price each added a goal in the fourth for the Gauchos.

Goalkeeper Rick Wright posted 11 saves between the posts for the Gauchos.

UCSB will continue action this Friday when it hosts Cal Baptist at 4:00 p.m. at Campus Pool.
