Gauchos Tops Anteaters

Santa Barbara, Calif.- Jake Wien had a 25 kills and nine digs, hitting an average of .419 to lead the men's volleyball team to a 30-27, 30-24, 24-30, 34-32 (3-1) win over visiting UC Irvine Friday night.

The Gauchos, 6-4 overall and 3-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, hit .409 as a team. Outside hitter Evan Patak accumulated 13 kills, hitting an average of .571 overall and Michael Kennedy contributed with 12 kills, nine blocks total and hitting an average of .571 overall. Libero Aaron Mansfield had five digs while setter Dane Jensen assisted the Gauchos with match-high 63 assists.

UC Irvine outside hitters Jimmy Pelzel, Spencer Bemus, and Paul Spittle had 25, 13 kills and 12 kills respectively.The Anteaters also received major contributions from setter Brett Ried who notched 43 assists and ended with a .462 setting percentage. Libero Doug English had 15 digs.

Next up for No. 8 UC Santa Barbara is UC Santa Cruz on Saturday night. From there, next week the Gauchos will battle USC on Feb. 13.
