Freshman middle blocker Theo Brunner had an outstanding match in the Gauchos' losing effort, putting away 10 kills at a clip of .769 against Long Beach State.  UCSB will now face UC Irvine, losers to UCLA, in the second round tonight.

Santa Barbara, Calif. - Top two seeds, UCLA and Cal State Northridge, both advanced to the second round winners bracket, while Stanford and Long Beach State both upset their opponents to stay on the winning side in the first round of UC Santa Barbara's 41st annual Elephant Bar Invitational. Host and No. 4 seed UCSB, along with No. 3 seed Pacific, No. 7 seed USC, and No. 8 seed UC Irvine all lost their first round matches and now move on in the consolation bracket.

Match 2 • No. 5 Long Beach State 3, No. 4 UC Santa Barbara 0 (30-25, 30-22, 30-26)
