The first weekend of the Big West Championships concluded this afternoon with Day 2 of the Men's Decathlon competitions. After the first weekend the Men currently lay in 5th place with Kent Centers' (Jr.) two points.

Deciding to go for the Decathlon only a few weeks ago, Centers on the Men's side, had him go over a respectable 6,300 points to finish in 7th place after entering Day 2 in 8th. In the Day's first event, the 110m High Hurdles, Centers had an o.k. sprint with a 16.23, just off of his seasonal best which stands at 15.85. He then got through the second event, the Discus scoring his lowest points of the Decathlon with a mark of 94-09.

Centers, then bounced back going a lifetime best in the Pole Vault of 14-03.25 to finish in 2nd place in that event. He than tossed a personal best in the Javelin Throw, 128 feet, to move into 7th place and a little less than 200 points off of Cal St. Fullerton's Turner who stood in 6th place after a great first day.

Centers looking to run under 4:30 in the 1500m could have moved into 6th if Turner slipped to 5:00 in the event and Centers could crack 4:30. Knowing this, the Gaucho would set off on pace to set himself up for such a situation. Coming through a bit slow through 400m, Centers and Maghzi of UC Irvine would break away from the field. Centers would cross the line in 2nd place just off of Maghzi's 4:25.76 in 4:27.36. Turner of Fullerton would run within the thirty second spread, finishing in 4:42.02 and keeping Centers in 7th place, nonetheless a good performance for the first time Gaucho Decathlete.

The Multi-Event Gauchos will next join the rest of the team again at Cal St. Northridge as the Big West Championships continue on Friday afternoon with the Championship prelims in most events. Centers will look to get the Regional Qualifying mark of 6-10.75 in the High Jump, which he narrowly missed in Day 1 of the Decathlon, joining his teammate Jacob Maus (So.) in Utah for the West Regional Championships while also scoring big points for the Men.
