IRVINE, Calif. - UCSB finished second at the All-Cal Challenge Cup held Saturday at UC Irvine. Despite some fine individual performances and five event victories the Gauchos were unable to hold off the depth of the host Anteaters. Irvine captured the team title with 269.5 points, UCSB finished second at 225.5, followed by UC San Diego (197), UC Davis (156) and UC Riverside (99).
Eugene Bradley continued an impressive sophomore season setting a personal best 53-11 (#4 All-time UCSB) to win the shot put, taking third in the hammer at 176-0, and finishing eighth in the discus at 145-10. All three marks qualify Bradley for the Big West Championships and his shot put best fell just 1.5 inches short of the NCAA Regional mark. Junior Ryan Lockner also had a lifetime best in the shot of 52-6 (#8 All-time) that was good for second.
Freshman Nick Cunningham won the 200m in 21.74 (#4 All-time) after taking second in the 100m (10.92 - #7 All-time). Cunningham also led off the winning 4x100m relay (42.01) for the Gauchos. Senior Nohel Corral took second in the 400m, posting a season best and Big West qualifying 48.76.
In one of three thrilling distance finishes, Sophomore Tetlo Emmen out kicked Kyle Dunst of UC Davis to win the 800m at 1:53.80. Senior David Monico out dueled Steve Laurie of UC Davis in the 5,000m, 14:36.68 to 14:36.87. Senior Pablo Gallegos ran 14:54.22 for third. Gaucho freshman Mike Chavez took UC Irvine's Tom Whelan and Ricky Barnes all the way to the tape in the 1500m that saw the threesome cover a furious final 400m in 57 seconds. Whelan (3:57.09) edged out Barnes (3:57.26) and Chavez (3:57.27) for the win.

Alex Cardiasmenos knocked over 20 seconds off his previous best in the 3000m steeplechase to finish second at 9:18.86. Freshman Mike Powers made a nice debut in the event with a Big West qualifying 9:38.69.
Hunter Orahood, a junior transfer from Saddleback College, made his Gaucho debut clearing 6-6.75 in the high jump for third and throwing the javelin 157-11 for fourth place. Fellow Saddleback alum, senior Mark Martello kept the Gauchos in the meet, scoring 21.5 points in four events. Martello tied for second in the pole vault at 15-3, and also scored in the javelin, high jump and triple jump.
