Balanced Gauchos Finish Tied for Eighth at Del Walker Intercollegiate

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Freshman Tony Verna continued his solid play with a 3-over-par 216 to lead a balanced UC Santa Barbara squad to an eighth-place finish at the Del Walker Intercollegiate in Long Beach, Calif.

Verna was actually in eighth-place after two rounds, including a first round score of 69. He finsihed-up with a 76 in the third round to end at 216.

Junior Joe Ryon finished one-shot back of Verna with a 217, good for 24th-place. Rounding out UCSB's fivesome were senior Greg Wells who shot 218 to tie for 26th, sophomore Darren Schwartz who shot 222 to tie for 41st and sophomore Chris Lavery who shot 232 to tie for 62nd-place.

Lamar University easilly won the tournament finishing at 21-under-par 831, 17 shots ahead of second-place Houston. Dawie VanDer Walt of Lamar won the individual title with a 9-under-par 204.

UCSB has completed the fall portion of its schedule. The Gauchos return to action at the John A. Burns Invitational in Honolulu on Feb. 22, 2006.
