BARONA, Calif. - Freshman Tony Verna shot a 9-under par 207 and two other Gauchos finished at or under-par to lead UC Santa Barbara to a season-best 12th-place finish at the Taylor Made Barona Cup hosted by San Diego State. UCSB finished with a 12-under par 852 for the tournament.

Verna shot a 1-under par 71 in the first round of the tournament, but he finished out with back-to-back 4-under par 68s in the second and third round to finish at 207, tying him with Utah's Dustin Pimm and Fresno State's Jason Anthony for 11th-place. Pimm is the grandson of former UCSB basketball coach Jerry Pimm.

Verna has now been UCSB's top finisher in each of its last two tournaments. He finished tied for 28th at The Presige at PGA West last week.

In addition to its best finish of the fall season, UCSB also shot its best single round. The Gauchos shot a 279 in the rain-delayed second round of the tournament marking the first time this year the teamm shot below 280. In addition, UCSB never shot higher than 287 in its three round of the Barona Cup.

Brigham Young University ran-away with the team title at the Barona Cup. The Cougars shot a 42-under par 822 to finish 12 shots ahead of Fresno State. BYU also finished 15 shots up on Louisville and 16 ahead of San Diego State. James Love of the University of Denver, shot a 15-under par 201 to win the individual championship.
