Sophomore Scott Lewis's best finish ever helped UC Santa Barbara shoot an 898, good enough for sixth-place at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif. Lewis placed seventh out of 100 golfers with a 3-over par 219.

Lewis was one of two Gauchos in the top-10. Joining the Henderson, Nev., native was junior Brian Hollenbeck. Hollenbeck, the team's top golfer in 2007-08, carded a 5-over par 221 to finish tied for 10th.

Another junior, Matt Grush, UCSB's top placer at the first tournament of the season, tied for 37th at 229, 13-over par. Freshman Adam Carter, seeing the first action of his career, tied for 50th at 232, 16-over par. Sophomore Tyler Weir was the final Gaucho, finishing 18-over par at 234.

Colorado State won the team title with an 877, seven shots ahead of Idaho, 16 better than Oregon State, 17 better than Denver, 19 better than Washington State, and 21 shots better than UCSB and Missouri-Kansas City.

Denver's Daniel Wax won the individual title in a playoff with Washington State's Kevin Tucker. Wax and Tucker each carded 3-under par 213.

The Gauchos return to action on Oct. 16-17 when they travel to the Del Walker Intercollegiate in Long Beach, Calif.
