Gauchos Use Balanced Attack for Surprise Fourth-Place Finish at 2004 Big West Golf Championship

April 27, 2004

Final Stats

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif. - Senior Brian Six shot a 1-over par 217 to finish in a tie for 11th-place as the UC Santa Barbara golf team finished fourth at the 2004 Big West Golf Championships at Tijeras Creek Golf Course in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.

Six, who was selected Second Team All-Big West following the tournament, led a balanced UCSB attack. The Gauchos were seeded eighth prior to the tournament but were one of only four teams to break the 880 mark. In fact, the 879 was the team's best score since it shot an 869 at the John Burns Intercollegiate at the University of Hawaii in early February.

In addition to the solid finish by Six, three Santa Barbara players, Greg Wells, Joey Ramos and Michael Feuerstein, shot 222 to finish in a tie for 19th. Ramos had the lowest round of any Gaucho player. He shot a 69 in Monday's first round. Nick Telliard shot 224 and finished in a tie for 24th.

Long Beach State and UC Riverside tied for the team championship with scores of 864. The 49ers, however, earned the team title because their player, Todd Saukkola, won the individual title at 208. Cal State Northridge finished third, five shots ahead of UCSB, and Pacific finished fifth at 881, two shots behind the Gauchos.
