UCSB Finishes Seventh at Big West Golf Championships

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif. - For much of Monday's first round at the Big West Golf Championships at the Tijeras Creek Golf Club in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., UC Santa Barbara ran a close second to tournament-leader Cal Poly. The Gauchos, however, struggled over the final few holes of the first round and all 18 of the second round before shooting a solid 291 in Tuesday's final round to finish in sixth-place with a score of 891. Cal Poly won the team title at 853.

Santa Barbara was paced by junior Joe Ryon who tied for fifth-place with a 1-over par 217. He was 3-under par heading into the final round but shot 76 on Tuesday to finish at 1-over. Sophomore Ryan Keefe tied for 11th-place in the tournament with a 4-over par 220 and sophomore Marty Melcher tied for 28th with a 14-over par 230. Senior Greg Wells and freshman Tony Verna each shot 15-over par 231 to finsih tied for 30th.

Cal Poly won the title by 15 shots over second-place UC Irvine, the No. 1 seed enterin the tournament. Long Beach State finished third, 19 shots back of the Mustangs. Long Beach's Ryan Panichpakdee won the individual title by seven shots over Cal Poly's Travis Bertoni, with a 16-under par 200. Panichpakdee's score included a 10-under par 62 in the final round.

Rounding out the team results, Cal State Northridge was fourth at 876, Pacific fifth at 886, UCSB sixth at 891 and UC Riverside, the defending team champion, was seventh at 899.
