UC Santa Barbara bounced back from its poorest showing of the year, a 20th-place finish at its own Bite/Pacific Coast Intercollegiate, with a solid ninth-place finish at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic (WCC).
While UCSB never shot below 306 at the Bite/Pacific Coast Intercollegiate, all three of its rounds were at 290 or below at the WCC. The Gauchos shot 288 in the first round, 290 in the second round, and a best of 285 in round three. The total of 863 was good enough to allow Santa Barbara to tie for ninth with Boise State. Both schools finished three shots back of Drake University, which finished eighth.
The tourney, hosted by the University of Wyoming at Talking Stick-North in Scottsdale, Ariz., was won by nationally-ranked Texas-El Paso, which shot an even-par 840, seven shots ahead of second-place Wyoming.
Michael Feuerstein paced UCSB with a score of 214, and a 21st-place finish. Feuerstein was two-under par at 68 in the first round, and then he followed-that up with a 74 and 72 to finish at 214. Joe Ryon the team's top finisher at the Bite/Pacific Coast Intercollegiate, along with Nick Telliard, each struck an eight-over par 218 to tie for 42nd-place.
UCSB's top player, Greg Wells, struggled in the first two rounds. He entererd the final round of the tournament at 11-over par, but he shot a two-under par in round three, finishing in a tie for 47th, at 219 for his three rounds. Marty Melcher shot a three-round total of 222, finishing tied for 68th, to round out the field.
In the tournament, no Gaucho player shot a higher score than 77, and there were three rounds shot at or below par.
UCSB returns to action on April 25-26. The Gauchos will take part in the Big West Championship at the Tijeras Creek Golf Club in Irvine, Calif.
