SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - After the first round of the 60th Annual Western Intercollegiate Tournament, UC Santa Barbara was tied with Stanford for second-place. The Gauchos, however, could not hold on in the rain-shortened tourney, finishing in a tie for seventh.
UCSB shot a first round score of 289, five shots back of Duke. Playing in the wind and the rain on the second day, the Gauchos shot a 304 to finish at 593 and in a tie with Long Beach State for seventh. There were 16 teams in the tournament.
Joe Ryon, who has consistently been the team's top finisher this season, shot a 5-over par 145 to finish in a tie for 14th-place. Tony Verna finished tied for 19th at 146.
Greg Wells shot 151 to finish in a tie for 412nd while Marty Melcher and Ryan Keefe each shot 155 to tie for 67th.
Duke held on to win the tournament team title with a 577. Stanford finished second at 579. Cardinal golfer Rob Grube tallied a 2-under par 138 to win individual honors.
UCSB returns to action on Monday, April 3, when it hosts the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate at Rancho San Marcos Golf Course. The 16-team field will play 36 holse on Monday and 18 on Tuesday, April 4.
