Gauchos Struggle to 18th-Place Finish at John Burns Intercollegiate

HONOLULU - Joe Ryon shot a 5-under par 67 in the first round and finished at minus-3, and Tony Verna shot a minus-2 214, but UC Santa Barbara struggled to an 18th-place finish at the John Burns Intercollegiate in Honolulu.

The Gauchos, who actually tied Utah for 18th-place, shot over 290 in each of the three rounds. They shot 293 in the first and 291 in the second and third rounds.

Ryon finished in a tie for 42nd-place and Verna tied for 56th.

Greg Wells struggled to a first-round 78, but bounced-back with respectable 73s in both the second and third roiunds to finish at 224. Darren Schwartz shot 227 and Chris Lavery 229 to round out UCSB's finishers.

The tournament was Santa Barbara's first since the fall season. UCSB will return to action on March 6 when it travels to the PGA West Course to play in UC Riverside's Braveheart Invitational.
