UCSB Nipped By Long Beach State

Feb 1, 2003

Box Score

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Tony Darden made two free throws with 2.2 seconds remaining to give Long Beach State a 68-67 victory over UC Santa Barbara Saturday night.

The Gauchos (9-10, 6-3 Big West Conference) erased a 65-58 deficit with 1:03 remaining to take a 67-66 lead on Branduinn Fullove's layup with 6.6 seconds left.

Fullove missed a free throw and a chance for a three-point play following his basket.

The 49ers (3-15, 2-7) quickly got the ball down court, and Darden was fouled as he attempted to shoot.

After Darden converted both free throws, Fullove was unable to control a pass under the Gauchos basket as time ran out.

Long Beach State snapped a four-game losing streak and defeated UC Santa Barbara for the eighth time in nine games at Long Beach.

Freshman Jibril Hodges led the 49ers with a career-high 19 points, including 5-of-11 from three-point range.

Kevin Roberts scored 13 points and Vance Lawhorn added 13 points and 8 rebounds for the 49ers.

Fullove, who had been 27-of-28 from the foul line over the past four games, missed two critical free throws in the final 18 seconds. He finished with 20 points.

Nick Jones scored 16 points and Mark Hull added 10 for the Gauchos.
