2004-05
Derek Wheeler returns to the UCSB roster as a mid-season addition...He has been practicing with the team since December, but was officially approved by the NCAA to compete, on January 31, 2005.
2003-04
Wheeler did not play in 2003-04.
2002-03
Wheeler averaged 0.2 points per game as a freshman...Increased his scoring average to 0.3 during Big West Conference games...Played in 16 games on the season...Averaged 1.6 minutes per contest...Shot 50% from the floor sinking 1-of-2 shots...Also shot 50% from the free throw line on 1-of-2 shooting...Pulled down two rebounds on the season...Committed six personal fouls and turned the ball over two times...Finished the season with a total of three points...Played a season high four minutes in a victory over Centenary...Scored the first point of his career, a free throw, in a contest with Cal State Northridge...Made the first field goal of his career in a victory at home over UC Irvine...Was perfect from the field in that game...Played his best basketball during a three game span against Long Beach, Irvine, and Riverside, going 1-1 from the field and pulling down two defensive rebounds.
2001-02
Wheeler redshirted his first year at UCSB.
High School
Wheeler attended Woodbridge High School in Irvine, CA...Averaged 10.0 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.0 blocks and 2.0 steals per game as a senior...Shot 54.0% from the field and 74.0% from the free throw line...Scored a career-high 18 points against El Dorado HS...Selected All-Sea View League following his senior season...Helped Woodbridge to the Sea View League Championship in 2000-01...Played for John Halagan.

Derek Lee Wheeler was born March 26, 1983 in Westminster, CA...He was on his high school's Honor Roll all four years...Also competed in track and field as a high school athlete...When he was 13, Wheeler was the California State Chess Champion for his age group...Majoring in Chemistry with a possible minor in Astronomy...Hopes to work for NASA as a chemical analyst.
