If he improves his strength, sophomore forward Sam Phippen could see an expanded role as a reserve in 2008-09...He is probably the best deep perimeter shooter among the Gauchos frontcourt players.
2007-08
As a redshirt freshman in 2007-08, Phippen played 61 minutes in 19 games...Scored just seven points and attempted only nine shots in his appearances...Scored three points in a win at Loyola Marymount, also producing a season-high four rebounds against the Lions...While he is generally considered a very good three-point shooter, Phippen attempted just three in his first season, missing all three.

High School
Phippen attended Durango High School in Durango, Colo....Was rated as the seventh-best senior player in the state in 2006 by COHOOPSTRACKER.com...He was the Southwestern League Player of the Year and a First Team All-Southwestern League selection after leading Durango to a 20-5 season...Phippen was also a Third Team All-State choice...Averaged 16.2 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game as a senior...Also averaged one steal and one blocked shot per game...In addition to his solid work on the interior, Phippen made 23-of-54 shots from outside the three-point arc, 43.6%...Overall, he shot 57.7% from the field and 73.4% from the free throw line...Scored a career-high 28 points against Farmington HS of New Mexico...Scored 400 points in his final season, a school record...Set a Durango standard for blocked shots in a season as well when he swatted 42 as a junior...Pulled-down a career-high 15 rebounds against Boulder HS...Phippen had highs of four blocked shots against Grand Junction HS, four steals against Alamosa HS and five assists against Farmington HS...As a junior he averaged 9.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game...Phippen helped Durango to three Southwestern League titles and three postseason appearances...Coached by Tim Fitzpatrick.
