Leroy Heu, MA, ATC
Head Athletic Trainer

Leroy Heu, a native of Honolulu, Hawaii, joined the UCSB athletic training staff as the head athletic trainer in 1994.

Leroy graduated from San Jose State in 1982 with a Bachelor's degree in physical education with an emphasis in athletic training and a minor in biology. While in school, Leroy also worked as an athletic trainer for the San Francisco 49ers, the National Football League Players Association, and the Hula Bowl Collegiate Football Classic. Post graduation, he accepted the head athletic trainer position at Fremont High School.

In the spring of 1983, Leroy became the assistant athletic trainer for the Arizona Wranglers of the United States Football League followed by a return home for a short stay at the University of Hawaii, Manoa as an interim assistant athletic trainer. The following spring, he returned to the Wranglers.

Leroy returned to his alma mater in 1984 as an assistant athletic trainer at San Jose State University for seven years. During his second stay in Northern California, he received his Master's degree in health, physical education, and recreation with an emphasis in athletic administration from St. Mary's College in 1989.

Leroy had a one-year stay at UCSB as an assistant athletic trainer in 1991 before returning to the University of Hawaii, Hilo as head athletic trainer in 1992.

Returning to UCSB in 1994, Leroy has been very active around the athletic department including the design of the new Harry Callihan Athletic Training Room, opened in 2005. Leroy currently works with men's volleyball and women's water polo.

He is a member of the NATA and is a qualified examiner of the NATABOC.

Leroy currently resides in Goleta, California while visiting his family often in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is well known around the office for his to-die-for barbeque.

Bob Annable, ATC

Bob was born in San Diego and grew up in the north San Diego county town of Encinitas. Bob's interest in athletic training began in high school where he volunteered as a student athletic trainer after learning some basic techniques from some of the coaches on the staff. He also attended clinics put on by the San Diego State athletic training staff and read various texts to begin his journey in athletic training.

After graduation from San Dieguito high school in 1972, Bob attended Palomar Junior College and began working in the athletic training room under the direction of the head athletic trainer Bill "Gunny" Dedic. Involved with all sports offered at Palomar, he also traveled with football, men's basketball, and wrestling. Bob transferred to UCSB, continuing his education and study under head athletic trainer Harry Callihan. Bob was involved with all the teams, with primary assignments overseeing the men's and women's volleyball teams. Bob graduated with a degree in physical education in 1979 and was NATA certified in May 1980.

Upon graduation, Bob served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at the University of California, Berkeley. He worked with the football team and traveled with the men's track and field team. He was also the athletic trainer for the national champion men's swim team. After the one year graduate assistantship with Cal, Bob moved across the Bay to become head athletic trainer for Skyline College in San Bruno, California. He oversaw a program with 10 intercollegiate sports and instructed the athletic training students in the fundamentals of athletic training.

In 1987 Bob returned to his alma mater to work as an assistant athletic trainer. His assignments included overseeing the soccer and baseball programs. But in 1991, Bob left UCSB to eventually work for the HEALTHSOUTH Corporation in Santa Rosa, California. Besides his day to day responsibilities with patient care, he also served as outreach coordinator to 5 high schools and was the athletic trainer for the Santa Rosa Rugby Club. He then transferred to the HEALTHSOUTH facility in Ft. Collins, Colorado, where he was also part of the outreach program working with USA Wrestling as an athletic trainer for national and international events along with working with rodeo from Little Britches to the professional level.

Bob returned to Santa Barbara in 2001 as an assistant athletic trainer for UCSB. He currently works with men's soccer, men's and women's swimming, and golf.

Bob likes to ride his bike, ocean kayak, body board, fly fish, or just relaxing going to dinner or watching movie. Bob is a proud cancer survivor and will speak on behalf of the Cancer Center on the dangers of sun overexposure.

Nina Hsieh, MS, ATC

Nina Hsieh joined the UCSB athletic training staff after a three year stay in Arizona. She graduated in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, interning in the athletic training education program from California State University, Fullerton. After an internship at NASA Kennedy Space Center in 2001, she attended graduate school at Arizona School of Health Sciences. During graduate school, Nina was an assistant athletic trainer at Central Arizona College for one year and Phoenix College for another. She also interned with the Milwaukee Brewers minor league and the Arizona Heatwaves semi-pro soccer team. Upon graduation in 2003 with a Master's degree in Sports Health Care, she accepted the position as Co-head athletic trainer at Phoenix College. While at Phoenix College, she had duties including teaching classes and being an ACI for the accredited athletic training program at Grand Canyon University.

Nina returned to California in 2004 to UCSB as an assistant athletic trainer. Her current sport assignments include women's basketball and men's tennis, as well as overseeing the athletic training student internship program. Nina is a member of the NATA and is a qualified examiner of the NATABOC. Nina grew up in Southern California which her family still calls home and she currently resides in Santa Barbara.

Greg Waltner, MS, ATC

Greg joined the UCSB Athletic Training staff in August of 2006. His primary sport responsibilities are men's water polo, men's basketball, and women's tennis.

A certified athletic trainer since July 2004 and a member of the National Athletic Trainer's Association since 2002, Greg received his Bachelor's degree in sports medicine/athletic training from Eastern Michigan University.

Greg then made the move out west by attending the University of Oregon where he received his Master's degree in sports medicine/athletic training. While at the University of Oregon, Greg worked with the football program his first year and then transitioned to work with the cross country and track and field programs during his second year.

Kelly Walsh, MS, ATC, LAT, PES

A native of Southern California, Kelly returned to our sunny state after a nine-year stay in Massachusetts where she studied athletic training at Northeastern University in Boston. At NU, she honed her skills through cooperative and clinical education rotations in diverse environments, including Brandeis University and Harvard. She was also able to return home briefly in her senior year to work at USC for final cooperative rotation.

After earning her B.S. 2001, she joined the staff at Marlboro High School as the head athletic trainer. In her four years there, nearly all of the teams made it into the playoffs, where Kelly was able to help four of them take five state titles including back-to-back girls' volleyball titles and the coveted boys' ice hockey title. She filled the summers of 2002 and 2003 by working at the Carl Adams World Class Wrestling Asics Institute. This dynamic program was home to over 800 student-athletes. All of the athletes, including coaches and college counselors, were highly competitive and talented wrestlers.

During the spring of 2004, Kelly was sought out by the Boston Panthers semi-pro football team. She joined the staff of this Eastern Football League (EFL) team where her sound skills and quick wit helped her gain the players' trust and respect. In October, 2004 she assisted the Panthers in advancing to the EFL semi-finals. Her return in 2005 was met with as much enthusiasm as her recent departure was met with disappointment.

Kelly hopes to broaden her professional experience while working with the cross country and track and field teams at UCSB.

In her spare time she enjoys taking in movies and concerts, hiking, swimming and dancing till she drops at her friend's dance studio in Thousand Oaks.

Justin Ericson, MS, ATC

Justin became a member of the UCSB staff in August of 2008. He will primarily work with the Gaucho women's soccer and baseball teams.

A native of Nebraska, Justin graduated with a Bachelor's in Exercise Science with an emphasis in Athletic Training from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 2002. He then attended the University of Oregon, where he earned a Master's degree in Athletic Training. During his stay in Eugene, Justin had the privilege of serving as an athletic trainer for the Oregon football and wrestling squads.




Leah Frommer, MEd, ATC

Leah joined the UCSB training staff in August of 2008.

A native of northern Virginia, Leah is a 2006 graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, earning a B.S. of Education in athletic training with a minor in coaching.

After finishing at Miami and becoming certified, Leah took a year off from school to intern with the University of Virginia Sports Medicine department, working primarily with the men's tennis program. The Cavaliers were semifinalists at the 2007 NCAA Championships and the 2007 ITA Indoor Championships. Leah stayed at Virginia to obtain a Master's in Athletic Training/Sports Medicine. While completing her degree, Leah worked with the Cavalier women's volleyball program.

Her primary area of research is concussion epidemiology differences between males and females in high school athletes.

Making her first move to the West Coast, Leah's primary sports responsibilities at UCSB include women's volleyball and softball.

In her spare time, Leah looks forward to taking up new outdoor activities and spending time at the beach.
