A GALLERY FEATURING 'MR. GAUCHO'

They came in droves...an endless parade of loving family, loyal friends, the Gaucho faithful, community and civic leaders, and legions of Phil Womble's adoring fans.

They came to honor and pay tribute to a beloved figure whose patented smile beamed brightly as this colorful and classic character commanded center stage as the athletic department dedicated the Hall of Champions, which bears his name. A courageous champion in his own right, Phil called the dedication "my life's ultimate experience." The omnipresent 'wheeler-dealer' exhausted every ounce of energy as he delivered -- with heart-warming articulation -- a stirring and soulful speech that mesmerized the jam-packed, awe-inspired crowd.

Anne Dupee, who shares her indomitable spirit with Phil as a caretaker, confidante, and companion, was at his side -- camera in tow -- during a celebrated weekend that started with a Friday night welcome party at the Beachside Cafe on Goleta Beach and was followed the next day (Sat., April 26) with the official dedication of the Phil Womble Hall of Champions. The weekend concluded in The Thunderdome that night, site of the induction ceremonies for the Gaucho Hall of Fame, Class of 2008.
