The athletics rivalry between UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly has grown in
recent years, and now the schools plan to put their competition to good use.
As the Gauchos and Mustangs battle it out on the field, diamond, court and
in the pool, the Big West Conference rivals will seek to make fans and
students aware of their campuses' recycling and sustainability efforts. The
eco-slant to the rivalry fits both the colors of sustainability (blue and
green) and each schools colors (blue for UCSB and green for Cal Poly).
The Blue-Green Rivalry is based on the Gauchos and Mustangs competing in 16
sports. Each winner will receive one point per victory with two
points being awarded to the series winner in baseball and softball. The overall
winner will be announced each spring.
UCSB came out on top in the inaugural series over the 2009-10 school year by a score of 12-10. To see complete results, click here.
The creative angle of using games to promote campuses' sustainability and
recycling efforts is the first of its kind in college athletics. Both Cal Poly
and UCSB plan on expanding marketing of the innovative rivalry series to
include sponsor messages, recycling challenges and additional promotional
platforms in upcoming years.
Cal Poly and UCSB have a combined 40,000 student population and almost
20,000 faculty/staff and reach approximately a half million fans in the
Central Coast region each year through athletics.

As is the case with all University of California and California State
University campuses, sustainability, with the goal of sustaining our
environment, is a core mission at both Cal Poly and UCSB.
